No Woes For This Walker
02.10.08
Gary Hause is a native New Yorker and a professional walker. Didn’t know walking was a profession? Most people don’t think it is. Hause has walked across the U.S.A., Europe, U.K., Mexico, New Zealand, South America and Central America. If he wears a pedometer it would have recorded 17,222 miles so far. And, he’s not done yet.
“I have about 20,000 more miles to walk across Asia, Australia, Africa, and South America to break the Guinness Book World record of 37,000 miles for walking around the world,” said Hause.
It doesn’t take Hause much to get motivated. Before starting to walk each morning he eats a simple breakfast of oatmeal with sugar, two eggs and drinks coffee. Usually, he’s still in his sleeping bag when he does this. His goal is to walk 20-25 miles per day. A good night’s sleep is also part of his program. No fancy hotels for Hause though, he prefers to pitch a tent by the side of the road.
Hause said walking has made him appreciate the simple things in life like home-cooked meals, hot showers, and most of all—kind people. To Hause, walking is a cheap, healthy way to see the world.
“You never now who you’re going to meet, what’s going to happen, or what the weather will be like,” he said.
